Clinton Portis headed to injured reserve

"The Redskins plan to place running back Clinton Portis, who recently aggravated his groin injury, on season-ending injured reserve, two people with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday.

The problem occurred during Sunday's 19-16 overtime victory against the Tennessee Titans. Portis, who initially suffered a third-degree groin tear in Week 4 against Philadelphia, was re-injured early at LP Field when a Titans defensive player grabbed and pulled his leg. Portis also was placed on injured reserve last season after suffering a concussion.

Portis ran well in the first quarter against Tennessee, playing for the first time since suffering the severe groin tear during a Week 4 victory over Philadelphia. The nine-year veteran rushed for 32 yards (a 6.4-yard average) and caught one pass for a 14-yard gain.

After the game, however, Portis acknowledged he was not fully recovered from the injury. But he said he owed it to the team to play, especially with running back Ryan Torain still out with a hamstring injury."
