Cliff Lee throws 3rd straight shutout

"With two outs in the fifth inning, Mike Cameron lofted a fly ball to right field that took Domonic Brown by surprise.

Cliff Lee had retired the previous 11 batters, breezing through baseball's most prolific offense, and the game was moving along at such an easy pace that Brown was teetering on the precipice between participant and spectator.

"He spoils us out there," Brown joked. "That ball Cameron hit, I was out there almost asleep. I had to get on my horse."

Brown still corralled the ball easily, and Lee's defense managed to make a few impressive plays behind him Tuesday.

But as it has been for the past month, the lefty on the mound made it all look easy.

Lee wrapped up his third straight shutout with a perfect ninth inning Tuesday, sending the Phillies to a 5-0 win over Boston. The last Phillies pitcher with a shutout streak that long was Robin Roberts in 1950.

The history only begins there.

Lee now has a streak of 32 straight scoreless innings. That ranks fifth in team history, with Grover Cleveland Alexander's mark of 41 2/3 set in 1911 looming on the horizon.

In June, Lee has won all five of his starts, allowing just 21 hits in 42 innings and posting a 0.21 ERA.

In the fifth inning Tuesday, Lee launched a fly ball to deep left field that scored Brown from third for the Phillies' third run. It was the second run Lee has driven in this month. He's allowed just one.

As Darnell McDonald settled under Lee's sacrifice fly, the crowd at Citizens Bank Park roared its approval.

When Marco Scutaro slapped a leadoff single over a leaping Jimmy Rollins to break up Lee's no-hitter in the sixth, the crowd offered a standing ovation.

When Lee came to bat again in the seventh, he earned another huge applause."
