Cleveland Indians' Grady Sizemore has sports hernia surgery, out 4-6 weeks

"The injuries just keep coming for Grady Sizemore.

Placed on the disabled list Monday with a bruised right knee, Sizemore had surgery for a sports hernia Thursday. The Indians looked at this as a two-for-the-price-of-one arrangement.

Sizemore was expected to be on the disabled list for four to six weeks to let his knee heal. With that much downtime, they decided he might as well have the hernia corrected as well.

The latest injury to the two-time Gold Glove-winning center fielder was a double whammy as well. It happened when Sizemore slid hard into second base on May 10 against Tampa Bay at Progressive Field. Sizemore suffered a bruised right knee and jammed right hip, which led to the hernia.

He went on the disabled list May 16 and didn't play again until May 28. When Sizemore returned, his knee was playable, but the hernia was still an issue.

"We knew there was a high probability it needed to be addressed in the off-season," Indians head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff said. "We had a consult in Cleveland. It was determined that he could continue to play with it if symptoms remained at the level to allow him to continue to play."

Sizemore re-aggravated the knee and hernia Sunday while rounding first base against Baltimore in Camden Yards on a bloop double in the first inning. Sizemore, in talking to reporters Monday after being placed on the disabled list for the third time this season, said his main concern was that he would need microfracture surgery on his right knee after undergoing the same operation last year on his left knee. He made no mention of the hernia."
