Steve Clarke is keen to see Shane Long pledge his future to West Brom and sign a new contract – just over a week after trying to sell him.

Hull were all set to buy the Ireland striker for over £5million before the deal fell through amid claims the bid had been lowered.

Baggies boss Clarke had face-to-face talks with Long 26 yesterday for the first time since the mess on the transfer deadline day.

Long is out of contract at the end of the season and Clarke said: “The club made a decision which was right for them – obviously I’m part of the club – but very quickly the bid collapsed.

“Shane and his advisor need to sit down and talk with the club to try and get a resolution.

“Given contract talks had stalled for so long it is possible that’s why the club originally accepted the bid.
