Chipper to begin brief rehab stint in minors

"Chipper Jones is going back to Class-A ball.

The Braves' 38-year-old third baseman is scheduled to play for Class-A Rome on Friday to begin what will likely be a brief rehab assignment.

Jones has progressed rapidly since July 9 arthroscopic surgery for torn meniscus in his right knee. He took some grounders and some live batting practice on Friday at the Braves' Triple-A Gwinnett County ballpark, including some swings against Hall of Famer Phil Niekro.

His rehab assignment is set for Rome because the Gwinnett team is not using the designated hitter against Louisville, and the Braves want Jones to DH for at least one or two games. He will DH on Friday and probably Saturday, unless he decides he wants to play some third base Saturday."
