"Braves third baseman Chipper Jones left the team and returned to Atlanta on Wednesday to be with his 7-year-old son, Shea, when he underwent sinus surgery.
Jones was back in South Florida by Wednesday night and rejoined the Braves in the dugout during the third inning of their series finale against the Marlins. He entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning and played the rest of the way.
"When he was 2, he had a gastro problem and they gave him antibiotics, and the antibiotics stripped the lining of his stomach away," Jones said. "He was in the hospital for about two months; it was touch-and-go for awhile. So now he's got this sinus problem and he can't take antibiotics to get rid of it."
