"The Chiefs got a jump on other NFL teams looking for a new head coach or assistant coaches by promoting their defensive coordinator, Romeo Crennel, to the top job on Jan. 9.
Almost a month later, the Chiefs are still looking for an offensive coordinator and position coaches for wide receivers and the offensive line. They've announced only one staff addition, special teams coach Tom McMahon.
At the rate they're going, the Chiefs might not have a full staff by the start of training camp this summer.
"Hiring a staff, it's not always as easy as you might think it is," former Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said. "It can take some time to get a staff the way you want it. I never got it the way I wanted it in the first year other than in Kansas City. Other than that, it always takes a little time. Usually, you have to make adjustments in the second year to really get it the way you want."
It didn't have to be that way for the Chiefs. Once Crennel was hired, they were free to build a staff while six other teams were still searching for a boss.
Instead, at least in some instances, they have fallen behind. Three of those teams already have a coordinator on each side of the ball. At least one, Jacksonville, has a full staff."
