Kareem Hunt says he was “shocked” when he found out about Alex Smith getting traded to Washington. Nevertheless, the Chiefs running back is fully confident in what Patrick Mahomes brings as the presumptive starting quarterback in Kansas City next season.

The Chiefs trading away their 33-year-old starting QB is a move to the future. Mahomes, like Hunt, will be entering his second NFL season in 2018, and Kansas City thinks its 2017 NFL Draft investment is ready.

"I’m very excited for Pat. He’s a great quarterback,” Hunt told Sporting News on Thursday. "I know he’s going to be just fine by going out there and just playing football.

"He has great football instincts, an amazing strong arm. He can do a lot of things like throwing on the run, being able to break tackles back there or stay in the pocket and make throws."

Mahomes saw limited snaps in 2017 as Smith’s backup. He made just one start, in Week 17, in which he completed 22-of-35 passes for 282 yards and one interception. That performance coupled with what the Chiefs saw in their pre-draft workout with Mahomes, as well his work in practice, has the team confident in its young passer.
