According to the reports in English newspapers The Express and The Mirror, Mou wants a new addition in central midfield and sees the Spaniard as perfect cut price but quality option.

Despite an unconvincing start under Jose Mourinho, Chelsea are still in the race for three separate trophies, having secured FA Cup progression on Sunday.

Alonso is out of contract at Real Madrid this summer, and despite much back and forth, still hasn’t signed a new deal with Los Blancos.

During Mourinho’s three-year spell in the Spanish capital, Alonso was one of his greatest advocates and it’s believed that their mutual respect could see the 32-year-old move to Stamford Bridge rather than return to former club Liverpool.

That, plus Chelsea’s needs in the centre of midfield, could see Mourinho move for the World Cup winner this month, for a nominal fee.

Real Madrid supporters will be less than impressed if Alonso is allowed to leave however.
