Chelsea could take advantage of Real Madid’s pursuit of Gareth Bale with a £20million offer for Germany midfielder Sami Khedira.

Madrid’s pursuit of Bale for a world-record fee of £85million has left the Spanish champions keen to raise funds and slim down the squad left behind by Jose Mourinho.

And with young Spain midfielders Asier Illarramendi and Isco arriving at the Bernabeu for a combined outlay of over £50m Khedira appears to be surplus to requirements.

Mourinho is determined to strengthen the spine of his Chelsea midfield with Frank Lampard nearing the end of his career Michael Essien slowed by injuries and John Obi Mikel set to move on.

Khedira would fit the bill. The 26-year-old joined Madrid from Stuttgart in 2010 and retains good relations with Mourinho from the Blues boss’ time in the Spanish capital.
