"Typically, in this early part of the season, at least, the fourth quarter has been the time when the Cavaliers thrive. The weeks of coach Byron Scott's conditioning training camp pay off, and the added stamina helps the Cavaliers outwork and outhustle opponents.
These Cavaliers are still growing and still learning, though. And Wednesday they learned that the fourth quarter doesn't always have an on switch that can be flipped when needed --especially when veteran point guard Mo Williams is stuck on the sidelines, hobbled by another injury.
This time, when the Cavaliers needed to turn on the offense, they fizzled as New Jersey swiped a 95-87 victory at The Q in the second of a back-to-back set against the Nets. The Cavaliers dropped to 4-4 while the Nets improved to 3-5.
"For the first time, I think you saw us being the tired team tonight in the fourth quarter," Scott said. "Losing Mo hurt, but I thought they just outworked us."
The Nets outscored Cleveland, 28-18, in the fourth quarter, the first time the Cavaliers have lost the battle in the final stanza in four games. In their three-game winning streak, the Cavaliers had outscored opponents by an average of 27.9-24.4.
The guard trio of Daniel Gibson, Ramon Sessions and Anthony Parker shot a combined 8-for-25 one night after they scored 38 of the Cavaliers points. The bench, which outscored the starters, 52-41, Tuesday, held only a 44-43 edge in the loss. "
