San Diego Padres righthander Casey Kelly will have season-ending Tommy John surgery on April 1, according to The Associated Press.

Kelly, 23, had been a candidate for the team's rotation but might be out through the early portion of the 2014 season. He experienced renewed elbow discomfort earlier this month after being shut down twice last season because of injuries.

In in 29 innings over six starts for the Padres last season, Kelly was 2-3 with a 6.21 ERA and 26 strikeouts.

Kelly was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in the trade that sent first baseman Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres to the Red Sox in December of 2010.
