Manager Sam Allardyce is desperate to add to his attacking options with only Andy Carroll who is working his way back to fitness and Modibo Maiga to choose from.

However the move to sign Cole on a short-term deal will now not go ahead after his fitness levels were below the required standard.

"Cole is not fit enough to offer a contract" West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan's son Jack revealed via his twitter account.

"But he's thinking over getting fit with us and improving his fitness.

"We are looking at other non contract players."

The news will come as a disappointment to Cole who failed to secure a move elsewhere in the two month period after his release from the club.

The 29-year-old came close to signing for Premier League new boys Crystal Palace but saw that transfer fall through at the 11th hour.
