"Free-agent 1B Carlos Peña was on Sirius XM's MLB Network Radio on Tuesday talking a lot about how much playing for the Rays meant to him, but sounding like someone looking for a new team.
Peña said he didn't know if he was in the Rays' plans, and his chance to return was "more on their end, kind of like the ball is in their court." He also said the Rays were "so very special in my heart obviously, however, I understand that sometimes (the future) may not be the way I want it to be, and I just must adjust. And I'm actually excited about the new possibilities out there for me."
Peña made a team-high $10.25 million last season while hitting .196 with 28 homers.
Rays exec VP Andrew Friedman cited team policy of not talking about such personnel issues, but said, "I think it's well-documented how we feel about Carlos as a person and a player. We'll see how everything unfolds.""
