Little did the Brewers know that the worst injury news of the day would not come before their game against the San Francisco Giants.

Manager Ron Roenicke announced Saturday morning that centerfielder Carlos Gomez was going on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. After the game, the Brewers replaced Gomez with infielder Taylor Green, called up from Class AAA Nashville.

Worse news came later when shortstop Alex Gonzalez suffered a severe right knee injury on a slide into second base. Gonzalez was placed on the 15-day DL but is expected to be out much longer, if not the rest of the season, pending an MRI on his knee.

To replace Gonzalez, the Brewers selected shortstop Edwin Maysonet from Nashville. To make room on the 40-man roster for Maysonet, the Brewers transferred first baseman Mat Gamel - who blew out his right knee Tuesday in San Diego - from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL.

"It's very frustrating," said general manager Doug Melvin. "Alex was having a great year. It's an area that we don't have a lot of depth at.

"We've got to keep playing. There are a lot of games left."
