Cardinals' Ryan Ludwick heads to the disabled list

"Cardinals came and went before Friday night's game with Milwaukee and another is headed for a different destination — the 15-day disabled list.

Infielder Tyler Greene was called up from Memphis for the second time and was written into the lineup at second base. Reliever Fernando Salas, packing his bag as Greene spoke to the media, was sent back to Memphis for the third time this season. And right fielder Ryan Ludwick, feeling a twinge in his previously strained right calf as he exercised on the treadmill Friday afternoon, will be placed on the disabled list before tonight's game.

Ludwick, who hadn't appeared since last Friday in Kansas City when he reinjured himself running from third to home, probably wouldn't have been able to play in the field until next Tuesday in Colorado, according to general manager John Mozeliak, but he probably could have pinch hit this weekend.

"He had a setback," Mozeliak said. The GM had not decided as of game time Friday who would replace Ludwick on the roster when Ludwick officially is placed on the disabled list today. Lefthanded-hitting Jon Jay, impressive here earlier this season, would seem to be the leading internal candidate.

After an impressive batting practice display Thursday, it was presumed that Ludwick was about ready to at least hit in a game. "Obviously, we thought he was getting closer," Mozeliak said. "But after working out today, it's not healing at the rate we had hoped."

Ludwick said: "When I got to the park today, I felt great; I told Tony (La Russa) that I felt like I might be able to pinch-hit. Then, when I was running on the treadmill, I aggravated it. I felt a little grab, so I shut it down right away. I don't think we're back to square one or anything, but I know it's not ready."

So far, the club is hoping that Ludwick can return on the first day after the All-Star break, July 15 here against the Los Angeles Dodgers."
