Careening on a four-game losing streak, the Vancouver Canucks got worse here even before playing the Boston Bruins today (4 p.m. Pacific time, Sportsnet Pacific, Team 1040).

Canucks coach John Tortorella announced two hours before the opening faceoff that key veterans Dan Hamhuis and Chris Higgins would not play due to injuries sustained during Monday's 2-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

They bring the National Hockey League team's injury toll to seven players, including five defencemen.

Tortorella gave no indication of the severity of the latest injuries.

Hamhuis has been the best Canucks defenceman this season and is on Team Canada's Olympic roster, while Higgins is one of the few Vancouver forwards who has been scoring during the team's worst slump of the year.
