In order to understand the ugly circumstances facing the Phillies, it is helpful to review other similarly stressful situations from the past. The Americans are in a brutal dogfight against the Russians (for reasons surpassing understanding, the violent conflict doesn't escalate into a third World War or nuclear holocaust), and they are outnumbered. When our heroes attempt to launch more planes to even the odds, they find out that the aircraft carrier's catapult has malfunctioned. Stinger, the guy in charge – played by the irascible James Tolkan – is not pleased when he learns it will take 10 minutes to fix the problem.
