Does it make sense for the 49ers to hire Eric Mangini? Why not? Mangini is a Jim Harbaugh-Trent Baalke type of guy. He’s relatively young (42), intense and creative. The possibility of the 49ers hiring Man-genius first surfaced from CBS’ Jason LaCanfora’s twitter account.

In it, LaCanfora said Mangini would be hired to consult with the offensive line about certain defensive fronts. Mangini first became known as a defensive wizard under New England coach Bill Belichick about 10 years ago. He was then hired by the Jets in 2006 as head coach before getting punted from that job in 2010.

He hasn’t been in coaching since. Trading headset for microphone, Mangini has recently worked for ESPN as an analyst.

Mangini could be brought in to provide insight on another former Jets coach, Pete Carroll. Now in Seattle, Carroll, who’s also know for his defensive acumen, held the 49ers to 13 points in each of their last two games last season.

The 49ers offensive line is also widely recognized as the best in the NFL. However, they often didn’t play like it. In their win-win-loss, win-win-loss, win-win-tie pattern of last year, the offense often got shackled every third game.
