"Defenseman Brian Campbell was brought in for his offensive prowess and power-play abilities, not for what he can do defensively.
But his play without the puck and on the penalty kill is what has stood out recently, and his short-handed minutes have increased as he assumes a new role.
''It took me a little while once I got back [from a sprained right knee] to get out there [on the penalty kill],'' Campbell said. ''But I enjoy it. It's more ice time. It gets you more involved.''
The Hawks' penalty kill, a strength last season, has been a struggle this year. As of Wednesday, the Hawks were ranked 24th in the league at 79.4 percent. They allowed seven power-play goals during the circus trip but showed signs of improving -- including going 3-for-3 on the penalty kill Tuesday, holding the St. Louis Blues to just one shot with the advantage. Campbell was a part of it, playing 1:45.
Since the Hawks' 7-2 defeat to the Calgary Flames on the circus trip, Campbell -- who averaged only 37 seconds a game on the penalty kill last season -- is averaging more than 2:30 over the last five games. His season average has risen to nearly a minute as he has taken over a spot once held by Nick Boynton, who has played only 34 seconds on the penalty kill in the last three games."
