"No one in the press box or either dugout saw it, no umpire saw it and only a few fans and one television camera were watching Milton Bradley when he issued a one-fingered salute.
By Saturday morning, a clip of that two-second gesture was on TV networks across the country, and bloggers were declaring it the first "Bradley incident" of his Seattle Mariners career.
"He was just signaling 'one more out,' " deadpanned Ken Griffey Jr.
Bradley's flip came as he trotted back to his position in left field, and was aimed at a few fans who were doing their best to irritate him.
Before the game Saturday, manager Don Wakamatsu and general manager Jack Zduriencik insisted they hadn't seen Bradley's gesture live, and neither had seen it on TV.
"Someone asked me if I cared to see it, and I said 'No,' " Zduriencik said.
Wakamatsu said he doubted it would become a distraction, and that his clubhouse veterans would likely handle the situation.
"I haven't seen, but if I see it, I'll talk to Milton," Wakamatsu said.
Other teammates were quick to Bradley's defense, suggesting whatever issues he might have with anger on the field, he had none in the clubhouse.
And one pitcher had a few thoughts to share - anonymously, since the theory is the powers of baseball are going to do something."
