Cabrera's drunken-driving hearing delayed; evidence released

"A hearing to determine the next step in the Florida drunken-driving case of Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was postponed Friday morning, according to a St. Lucie County court clerk.

Cabrera's lawyer, Michael Kessler, had asked for a delay, the second postponement in the case. Cabrera was not required to attend Friday's hearing and will not be required to attend the rescheduled hearing.

Cabrera faces misdemeanor charges of suspicion of driving under the influence and two counts of resisting an officer without violence. Although the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reinstated Cabrera's driver's license late last month, he could lose it again if convicted of a DUI charge in court.

Meanwhile, the Florida state attorney's office released to the Free Press more than 200 pages of investigative documents, eight DVDs of audio statements and nearly two dozen photographs of the 2005 black Range Rover that Cabrera was driving the night of Feb. 16 when he was arrested in Ft. Pierce, Fla., en route to spring training in Lakeland.

Among the relevant findings is that after his arrest and release Feb. 17, Cabrera allegedly went to the impound lot to retrieve his SUV, showed the towing company his Venezuelan passport and drove off the lot despite not having a valid license. His license had been suspended earlier that morning as a result of the first baseman's refusal to take a breath test after officers found him next to his stalled vehicle on the side of a state highway."
