A year from now, maybe two, the Orioles rotation may feature Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman. On Saturday night, for the first and perhaps only time, the two were featured in the same game.

Bundy started for the first time, and Gausman followed. That seemed natural. Bundy was the Orioles’ first pick in 2011, and Gausman was chosen in the first round last year.

Soon, there will be debates about which one has the greater potential, who one should be No. 1. For now, manager Buck Showalter wanted to pitch Bundy first for the simple reason that if Gausman threw harder than expected, the younger man might try and overthrow.

Bundy allowed an unearned run in two innings, and Gausman threw three scoreless innings in the Orioles 5-2 to the Boston Red Sox before 9,469 at JetBlue Park.
