Bulger has fractured shin bone

"Marc Bulger took one MRI too many Monday.

An MRI for a groin-hamstring injury earlier in the day showed only a strain. Things didn't go nearly as well for MRI No. 2. That test revealed that Bulger has a tibial plateau fracture in his left leg.

"It's like a hairline fracture of the upper part of the shin bone," coach Steve Spagnuolo said Monday evening.

Spagnuolo said Bulger won't need surgery but will be out for three to six weeks.

"It's just crutches," Spagnuolo said. "He'll have to stay on it for a while."

There are only six games left in the 2009 season, but at this point Spagnuolo said Bulger would not be placed on the injured reserve list. But if Bulger doesn't play again this season, it's possible that the Arizona game was his last as a Ram. Although it's very early in the draft process, the team is already exploring the possibility of taking a quarterback in the 2009 draft.

For the immediate future, however, Kyle Boller takes over as the starting quarterback, beginning with Sunday's home game against the Seattle Seahawks. At the moment, rookie Keith Null is the only other healthy quarterback on the roster. Boller took over for Bulger in the third game of this season when Bulger suffered a bruised rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder against Green Bay.

Boller started the following two Sundays against San Francisco and Minnesota before Bulger returned to the lineup. For the season, Boller has completed 57 percent of his passes (49 for 86) for 481 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Spagnuolo said Bulger isn't sure when the fracture occurred in Sunday's 21-13 loss to Arizona. "Hard to tell, he had so much going on," Spagnuolo said."
