Broxton still feels confident

"Dodgers manager Joe Torre, pitching coach Rick Honeycutt and bullpen coach Ken Howell met with pitcher Jonathan Broxton on Sunday in hopes of getting the team's former closer straightened out.

Broxton gave up a two-run homer in the ninth inning Saturday, which turned a lead into a 5-4 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The blown save was his sixth this season and fourth since the All-Star break.

Until Broxton returns to the form that netted him 36 saves in 2009 (he currently has 22), Torre is going to be reluctant to put his pitcher back in those game-on-the-line situations.

"I think we have to not put him in the same situations in the ninth inning and try go get some appearances under his belt," Torre said. "Wherever we go, if we get to the postseason or not, it's very important that he finish the season with a good taste in his mouth."

Torre saw Broxton's recent inability to close out games as a confidence issue. Broxton disagreed.

"My confidence is fine," Broxton said after being saddled with his fifth loss of the season. "You just keep going out there and battling.

"That's all I'm doing is going out there and battling. That's all I can do."

Broxton was hitting the mid-90s with some of his pitches Saturday, so his health doesn't seem to be an issue. At least not in the physical sense. "
