Broncos' VI Super Bowls won't ever be forgotten

"From MCMLXXVIII to MCMXCIX, the Broncos played in more Super Bowls than any other NFL team — VI (XII, XXI, XXII, XXIV, XXXII and XXXIII).

Over a 21-year span, the Broncos had a better run than Julius Caesar, as Brutus would agree.

On the day of Super Bowl XLVI, both are remembered, one by a hotel on the strip in Las Vegas (Caesars Palace) and the other by a temporary signpost at the corner of Illinois and Louisiana streets in downtown Indianapolis (Broncos Boulevard).

Caesar is still dead. But the Broncos are making a comeback. According to the Chinese calendar, 2014 will start Jan. 31 and is the year of the horse. I'm just saying.

But before the Broncos reach Super Bowl No. 7 with Ol' No. 7 running the show, free-flowing memories, as a witness in person to all, of the Super Six:

Jan. 15, 1978, New Orleans — The Broncos didn't stay in a fleabag motel by the airport. It was worse. "I found a cockroach in the room today, made it my pet and took it for a walk," linebacker Tom Jackson told me in the lobby. "They talk about the hype and frenzy of the Super Bowl. You wouldn't know it out here."

Quarterback Craig Morton, the first notable No. 7, kept a taped diary for me. On Tuesday he recorded: "Tom Glassic weighed in today at 218. We're in trouble Sunday. Don't know how we can win." The starting guard had lost 36 pounds because of teeth problems.

Morton was right. He was sacked two times (as was backup Norris Weese), intercepted four times, completed passes only four times. His QB passer rating was 0.0."
