"The Broncos today executed a trade for New England Patriots running back Laurence Maroney, who was the team's first-round pick in 2006. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels was New England's offensive coordinator from 2005-08.
The Broncos sent a 2011 fourth-round pick to New England, and the Patriots gave up a sixth-round pick next season.
Maroney last season rushed for 757 yards and nine touchdowns.
Maroney was inactive with a thigh injury in New England's season-opening victory against Cincinnati on Sunday. He had been listed as questionable on the injury report. He played in just two of four preseason games.
The Broncos have not yet made a corresponding roster move, to carve room for Maroney. The team lists four active running backs on its roster: Lance Ball, Andre Brown, Correll Buckhalter and Knowshon Moreno.
In a loss to Jacksonville on Sunday, Moreno led Bronos rushers with 15 carries for 60 yards. Buckhalter added six carries for 15 yards."
