Southampton have insisted they don’t need to sell Virgil van Dijk - even for £60m.

The Dutchman is top of Jurgen Klopp’s defensive shopping list for the summer and is a man in demand with Manchester City and Chelsea also believed to be prepared to spend big on the centre-back.

But Saints chairman Ralph Krueger has stressed that there is no financial imperative for his club to sell their best players with many contracted for several years.

Van Dijk is one of those with his current St Mary’s deal not due to expire until 2022.

Kruger’s comments could be interpreted as an attempt to set the starting level of the bidding war for Van Dijk, who is believed to be keen on a move to a Champions League team.
