"Here's what is not a secret coming out of Dove Valley in the days leading up to the Broncos' season opener at Jacksonville: The Broncos will have only two quarterbacks on the active roster.
But who will be No. 2 behind starter Kyle Orton? Coach Josh McDaniels won't budge on whether it will be rookie Tim Tebow or veteran Brady Quinn.
"I don't have any plans to activate three," McDaniels said Thursday. "We're just planning on probably making a decision here shortly, toward the end of the week."
Conventional wisdom points to Tebow as the No. 2, with Quinn as the emergency quarterback because of the option to use Tebow in special packages. The Broncos used Tebow only in a traditional quarterback role in preseason games, but the team likely has plans to play Tebow in unconventional ways at times this season.
Those packages, whatever they may be, have been a closely guarded secret throughout the exhibition season. McDaniels on Wednesday said the team has tried to balance how much to reveal in the preseason — on both offense and defense — with the need to practice their schemes against a live opponent.
"I think if you feel really good about something and you have a pretty good idea that it's going to be a solid scheme for you and you don't feel like you have to show it — I think those are the ones that you don't go into the preseason and let everyone see it," McDaniels said. "I think that anything that is a big part, I mean like the core of what you do, you just do it, you know?"
Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio told reporters in Florida this week that his team is preparing for the Broncos to use Tebow in some fashion.
"I didn't consult with Josh before I told you that," Del Rio told The Florida Times-Union."
