During batting practice Monday in Reno, Nev., Alex Dickerson received news that, at an earlier juncture, might have floored him. But this being his fourth call-up to the majors, the outfielder promptly trained his attention on the task at hand.

"I never see it coming, but at the same time, it’s not as eye-opening as it was the first time," said Dickerson, whom the Padres officially recalled Tuesday. "It’s more business at this point."

Wednesday at Petco Park, the Poway native made his second consecutive start in left field. The night before, he had gone 1-for-5 after a day of travel. Padres manager Andy Green is a believer in allowing new arrivals to find their rhythm on the field, rather than the bench.
