Brewer gains a headband but loses a buddy

"The headband is back. And if portions of the preseason were telling, so might be Corey Brewer.

Brewer wore two NCAA championships at Florida and sported a fabric headband while doing so. In his debut NBA season a year ago, he went without it because coach Randy Wittman's team rule prohibits rookies from wearing one.

"No particular reason, other than he was a rookie," Wittman said when asked about the rule. "He graduated to his headband this year."

Brewer spent all summer in the gym working on a jump shot that abandoned him last season. In eight preseason games, he shot 40.3 percent from the field -- a slight improvement over last season's 37 percent -- but made eight of 12 three-point shots, one more than he made all last regular season.

Maybe it's the summertime work. Maybe it's the headband.

"I was missing it last year," Brewer said. "I would have wore it, but Coach Witt wouldn't let me. Once you wear something for three years, you get used to it. It's comfortable out there for me. From the first day I went to college, I wore it almost every day. If you saw me last year without it, you wouldn't have known who I was."

Roster is set The Wolves' opening-night roster was set late Monday afternoon. It remains the same after the team waived David Harrison, Chris Richard and Blake Ahearn on Thursday.

Richard and Brewer played together for the past four seasons at the University of Florida and with the Wolves. The two live just down the hallway from each other in downtown Minneapolis.

"Being with someone for five or six years, it's tough," Brewer said. "Every day you're with him and now he's not here anymore. It's a hard business: You're here one day and you think you're going to be here, and you can be gone the next.""
