"Barry Zito is expected to be sidelined for "a long while" in the estimation of Giants manager Bruce Bochy after the left-hander sprained his right ankle in the third inning of a rehab start for Triple-A Fresno on Saturday.
"I saw a picture, and it's pretty bad," Bochy said Sunday. "It's very swollen. It looks like there's a baseball in there."
Zito took an awkward step while coming off the mound to back up home plate after giving up a single and had to be helped off the field. Although the Giants weren't desperate to get Zito back, losing the struggling left-hander depletes their depth of starting pitching. Dan Runzler is the only other option on the 40-man roster should the Giants need another starter. Double-A left-hander Eric Surkamp is putting up impressive numbers but isn't on the 40-man roster."
