The Blue Jackets have signed Swedish forward Simon Hjalmarsson to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2014-15 season, luring one of the top European players to North America after his best season as a pro.

Hjalmarsson -- no relation to Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarson -- is a 6-foot, 182-pound winger. He's 25 years old.

Playing for Linkoping in Sweden's top league this season, he had 27 goals, 30 assists, 57 points and a 87 penalty minutes. His goal, point and penalty minute totals are all career-highs, and placed him among the SHL's elite. He was third in goals, fourth in assists, tied for third in points and fourth in penalty minutes.
