"The Dodgers didn't need an offensive explosion to snap their six-game losing streak.
All they needed was Casey Blake.
And Chad Billingsley.
Blake hit a solo home run in the second inning and Billingsley made it stand up as the Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 2-0 Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium.
The shutout was the second in Billingsley's career. His first came July 20, 2008 - also against the Giants.
Billingsley (8-5) held the Giants to four hits in that game. The Giants managed just five Wednesday.
"I kept the ball down in the zone," Billingsley said. "We got groundballs and you have a little bit better chance of success when you stay down in the zone.
That's what I try to do. Some days it just doesn't happen."
Billingsley held the Giants without a hit through the first three innings, although he had to squirm out of trouble after walking two in the third inning.
The Giants made Billingsley work his way out of trouble in the fourth inning when Aubrey Huff hit a leadoff double to right-center field and took third on a groundout. Pablo Sandoval hit a sharp grounder to second but Ronnie Belliard kept Huff anchored at third base before making the throw to first.
Juan Uribe ended the inning with a grounder to third.
The Giants had runners at first and second with one out in the sixth and Billingsley again used Sandoval and Uribe to escape. Sandoval hit a flyball to left field, and Uribe grounded to first. James Loney had trouble picking up the ball but recovered and flipped it to Billingsley for the final out.
"The story of the game was Chad Billingsley," Blake said. "If he can do that every outing, I like our chances."
Giants pitcher Barry Zito also pitched well in striking out four and scattering six hits in 7 1/3 innings. The Pierce College and USC product gave up three hits in the second inning but the damage came from Blake's leadoff home run."
