Blackhawks try to balance goalie load

"Despite the Blackhawks' goaltending situation looking eerily reminiscent of last season's rotation, coach Joel Quenneville insists he's not going there.

Antti Niemi got his second start in the last four games Friday night as the Hawks took on the Bruins at the United Center. Cristobal Huet was in net Wednesday night and pitched a 3-0 shutout over the Blues. That came on the heels of Niemi's 4-0 shutout of the Lightning on Sunday night, marking the first time the Hawks had consecutive shutouts with different goalies since 1983.

"The rotation might be Antti gets a little more ice time along the way, but Huet is going to play probably close to his normal share," Quenneville said. "When we looked at all the games and looked at the schedule, we're really busy. It's not based on the outcome, it's based on how you handicap over short stretches of games, and that's how it fell."

Huet rotated with Nikolai Khabibulin much of last season. Heading into Friday night's game, the first of four in six nights, Huet and Niemi had a combined 1.96 goals-against average in 32 games this season, lowest in the NHL. The pair led the league in shutouts with five, including Niemi's three in just seven starts."
