Behind a 14-3 run just past the midway point of the second half, the Lipscomb men’s basketball team picked up the second road Atlantic Sun Conference win of the season 75-74 over Northern Kentucky at the Bank of Kentucky Center in Highland Heights, Ky. on Friday night.

“I’m really glad that we put ourselves in position to be able to afford playing poorly in the last three or four minutes and hang on somehow for the win,” said Lipscomb head coach Casey Alexander. “But the win is what we came for and we’re going back with it so that’s good.”

With the contest tightly knotted 50-48 with 9:10 to play senior guard Khion Sankey tossed in a layup that would start the run. Redshirt-freshman guard J.C. Hampton then drained a three to make it a 55-48 advantage before freshman guard Josh Williams scored six of his 11 points on three-straight possessions.

Returning to the lineup after being sidelined for the Mercer game, junior forward Martin Smith capped off the run for Lipscomb with an old-fashioned 3-point play. Martin Smith finished the night with 15 points.

Junior forward Malcolm Smith led all scorers in the contest with a 21-point night making 14-of-21 from the charity stripe to help secure the win.

“We know that Malcolm is always going to play hard and give us his best effort,” said Alexander. “He finds a way to be productive and is an important part of our team and that’s what we need. He’s used to making big plays and he came through for us when we had to have a basket.”
