"The new Timberwolves coach probably will come from among a group consisting of Don Nelson, Terry Porter, Mike Woodson, Bernie Bickerstaff, Sam Mitchell, Rick Adelman and Larry Brown.
Brown, who turns 71 next month and who coached the Detroit Pistons to the 2004 NBA championship and Kansas to the 1988 NCAA title, interviews with Wolves owner Glen Taylor today.
Mitchell had a lengthy interview with Taylor on Monday.
Wolves basketball president David Kahn has interviewed Adelman, but Taylor has not. Adelman, 65, who has coached Portland, Golden State, Sacramento and Houston, is still undecided, for family reasons, on whether to return to the NBA.
Adelman might not get another opportunity for a while if he passes up a chance to coach the Wolves.
The Wolves didn't have to call any of their finalists to seek their interest in coaching. Each called the Wolves to express serious interest in the job. There were others, too.
Because of the NBA lockout, there hasn't been any pressure to hire. But the Wolves are expected to make their decision before long.
"The reason I would do it sooner is so the coach would have time to put his staff together," Taylor said Tuesday.
Nelson, 71, like Brown, is a hall of fame coach. He has more NBA victories (1,333) than any coach in history.
Mitchell, who
turns 48 next month, was a Wolves forward who became the NBA's coach of the year for the 2006-07 season with the Toronto Raptors.
Woodson, 53, took an Atlanta Hawks team in 2004-05 even younger than the current Wolves and compiled a 206-286 record over six seasons.
The Wolves like Porter, 48, also a former guard for them, because of familiarity. He was 99-116 during three seasons coaching in Milwaukee and Phoenix. "
