Damien Comolli lost his job at Liverpool for signing Jordan Henderson - but is happy the midfielder has gone on to prove him right.

The Frenchman was responsible for recruiting Henderson from Sunderland in a £16million deal in 2011 during his spell as director of football at the Merseyside club.

Henderson initially struggled to make an impact at Anfield and Comolli was sacked in 2012 after being accused by Liverpool’s owners, the Fenway Sports Group, of making a major blunder by spending such a huge sum on the young midfielder.

But Henderson developed into a crucial player for Liverpool and has captained the side since the departure of Steven Gerrard in 2015. And the 26-year-old’s standing is now so high that he will skipper England for the first time against Slovenia on Tuesday night.

Discussing Henderson’s rise with Jim White on talkSPORT, Comolli said: “He is one of the main reasons I got sacked.
