"Vikings wide receiver Bernard Berrian had some tough talk about the Saints defense last week, but he backed it up with a career-best performance Monday in a 30-27 victory against the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome.
Berrian caught six passes for a career-high 110 yards with a 33-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter that tied the score 27-27. Berrian said afterward that he ran the wrong route on that play.
Berrian also drew a critical 42-yard pass interference penalty on New Orleans safety Kevin Kaesviharn with 1 minute, 11 seconds remaining that set up a winning field goal by Ryan Longwell.
On third-and-3 from the Vikings 44, Berrian ran a deep route and quarterback Gus Frerotte fired the ball downfield. Kaesviharn clearly interfered with Berrian as he went up for the catch.
That play set up Longwell's 30-yard field goal with 13 seconds left.
Berrian's 33-yard touchdown catch came on third-and-16. Berrian and Aundrae Allison both ran routes to the middle of the field, and they actually collided as Berrian caught the ball at the goal line.
Berrian said he was supposed to run a post-corner route but made an adjustment once he saw the ball in the air.
"I ran the wrong route," Berrian said. "Gus was throwing it to Aundrae. I saw the ball and it was just determination to go get that ball. I wasn't letting that ball fall."
Berrian provided some bulletin-board material last week by saying the Saints defense has "big holes" in it. Frerotte completed 19 of 36 passes for 222 yards.
"We still left a lot of plays out there on the field," Berrian said. "But we were able to get the bulk of our big plays in that last quarter.""
