"Brett Favre shared a thought with Bernard Berrian before Sunday's game against Arizona that might have sounded far-fetched at the time.
"I told Bernard before the game, I said, 'Bernard, you got 10 catches today,' " Favre recalled. "A typical receiver, he said, 'Hey, great.' "
Never mind that Berrian had nine catches total through the first seven games and had become AWOL in the Vikings offense. But with Randy Moss no longer part of the equation, the Vikings needed for Berrian to re-establish himself in the passing game.
Favre proved nearly prophetic as Berrian finished with nine catches for 89 yards in a 27-24 overtime victory at Mall of America Field.
Berrian, who entered the game with only 87 receiving yards for the season, had his most productive game by turning short and intermediate catches into big gains. No play was bigger than his 22-yard catch in overtime, which put the Vikings in field-goal range.
Targeted on 11 passes overall, he went from forgotten man to an integral part of his team's comeback.
"I think everyone has got pride in themselves, and I don't think anyone in this locker room is going to just tank no matter what the record is," Berrian said. "We love to play this game."
With Moss gone and Percy Harvin hobbled by an ankle injury, the Vikings needed big contributions from others, and Berrian and Greg Camarillo stepped forward.
Berrian did damage with his catch-and-run speed, particularly on slant passes. Camarillo found openings underneath and caught four passes for 66 yards. He entered the game with only six catches for 63 yards for the season.
He made perhaps the biggest play of the game as a defender. On the Vikings' first possession of the game, Arizona's Kerry Rhodes intercepted a Favre pass and returned it 66 yards for what looked like a sure touchdown.
But Camarillo never gave up on the play and knocked the ball out of Rhodes' right arm at the 3-yard line. The ball bounced out of the end zone for a touchback."
