AFC North games are not supposed to be artistic masterpieces. Most times they have all the aesthetic appeal of having a root canal. When it is a Steelers-Bengals game it can be even uglier.

In a Monday Night game that was more Survival of the Fittest the Bengals outlasted the Steelers 20-10 at Paul Brown Stadium. It is Cincinnati’s first win on Monday Night Football since the 2007 opener against Baltimore and breaks a three-game losing streak.

After being way too pass heavy in the first half the Bengals got more balance in the final 30 minutes and ran it on 23 of 36 second-down plays.

Giovani Bernard scored both Bengals touchdowns and had 65 yards on nine offensive touchdowns. With the score tied at 10 at halftime Bernard scored the go-ahead points with a 27-yard touchdown on a little dumpoff pass by Andy Dalton with 6 minutes 8 seconds left in the third quarter.

It was the first reception of 20 yards or more by a Bengals running back since Brian Leonard had a 37-yard catch in Week 11 of 2011 against Baltimore. The Bengals were the only team in the league last year to not have a running back with a plus-20 reception.

Bernard had 65 yards on nine offensive touches. He had 8 carries for 38 yards and the touchdown reception.
