Wide receiver duels usually do not deliver but the matchup between A.J. Green and Calvin Johnson produced plenty of fireworks.

On a day when Green and Johnson combined for 15 receptions for 310 yards and three touchdowns it was a Mike Nugent 54-yard field goal that was the difference as the Bengals beat the Lions at the gun 27-24 at Ford Field.

It is the second straight week Nugent has had a game winner on the road.

Andy Dalton and Matthew Stafford each threw for over 300 yards. For Dalton who was 24 of 34 for 372 yards it is the second time in his career he has thrown for 300-plus yards and three touchdowns in two straight games.

With Stafford’s 357-yard game it ends the Bengals' 20-game string of not allowing a 300-yard passer.

The Bengals though might have suffered a bigger loss. Cornerback Leon Hall suffered a season-ending Achilles injury midway through the first quarter. Hall was covering a pass intended for Johnson in the end zone when he clutched his right foot and had a hard time getting up. Hall was down for a minute before being getting some help walking to the sideline. He was in tears on the bench before being taken to the locker room.

Two plays later the Lions would score their first touchdown to even the game at seven on a 3-yard pass from Stafford to Brandon Pettigrew.

It is the second time in less than two years that Hall has suffered an Achilles injury. He tore the left one during a Week 10 loss to Pittsburgh in 2011. It usually takes nearly a year to come back from that type of injury but Hall was on the field participating eight months later in the first practice of training camp.

Even though they rarely play in Detroit it has not been a good place for them with injuries. In 1995 Ki-Jana Carter who was the first overall pick in the draft suffered a knee injury at the old Pontiac Silverdome. In 2007 Kenny Irons had a career-ending ACL injury in a preseason game.
