Bill Belichick took responsibility this morning for failing to properly prepare his team for the new field goal rule that ultimately doomed the Patriots yesterday against the Jets.

Chris Jones was flagged for pushing Will Svitek into the offensive line during Nick Folk's 56-yard missed field goal. After the game Belichick disagreed with the ruling because Jones didn't line up in the second level but that's not how the rule is written.

Rule 9 Section 1 Article 3 (2) states “(Defensive) players cannot push teammates on the line of scrimmage into the offensive formation.”

On this morning's conference call Belichick said Jones should shoulder no responsibility for the penalty and the burden belongs at the coaching level. Jones spent quite a bit of time answering questions after yesterday's game and his accountability has gotten a favorable response. Yet Belichick wanted to remove that burden from Jones today.

"I think Chris is obviously trying to do the right thing by stepping up and taking responsibility but that’s not his responsibility" Belichick said to conclude his opening statement. "it’s ours. We just have to do a better job of coaching that. It’s not his fault that’s one me the coaching staff. We just have to do a better job there."

As for the misinterpretation of the rule Belichick said It's our job to understand the rules and whatever the bottom line is we didn't do it properly."
