"Barry Zito, making a rehab start for Triple-A Fresno on Saturday night, had to be helped off the field after incurring a leg injury. It was not immediately clear if he reinjured the foot he first sprained in April.
Former Chronicle NFL writer David White, who was at the game in Fresno, said Zito hurt himself as he allowed a third-inning RBI single. Zito started to move off the mound to back up the plate but stopped in pain. After the runner scored, the trainers ran out to get him. Zito reportedly left the dugout on crutches.
Zito was not set to return to the Giants anytime soon. Jonathan Sanchez, who took Zito's spot, is scheduled to start again in Atlanta on Tuesday night after two losses.
Beltran still hurting: Carlos Beltran took about 60 right-handed cuts off a tee before Saturday's game, but only a few left-handed before the pain in his right hand told him to stop.
"He still doesn't feel comfortable from the left side," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's going to do it again tomorrow, and we'll see where we're at."
Today is the seventh day since Beltran strained his hand swinging at a Roy Oswalt pitch in San Francisco, just shy of half the time he would be required to miss if he went on the disabled list."
