"Baron Davis played with a heavy heart in Tuesday's game against the Golden State Warriors, a day after the death of his beloved grandmother, Lela "Madea" Nicholson in Los Angeles.
Davis, who is wearing No. 85 in honor of the street in Los Angeles where his grandparents raised him, had 19 points, six assists and five rebounds in the Cavs' 95-85 loss to the Golden State Warriors at The Q. He left the team Wednesday to return to Los Angeles. It is not known when he will return.
Before Tuesday's game, coach Byron Scott had suggested Davis go home to be with his family.
"We know how important his grandmother was to him and how big a part she played in his life," Scott said before Wednesday night's game against the Bucks. "We sat there and talked for a few minutes. He got a little teary-eyed and he said, 'No, coach. I want to play tonight.' He even said he wanted to play in Milwaukee and then fly home.
"Chris Grant, our general manager, talked to him a little bit and told him, 'You need to go home. You're going to be playing with a heavy heart.' We understood that. We also understood at that particular time it was a safe haven to be on the basketball court and forget about everything going on.
"But the way he came out and played was very inspiring. Everybody on the team understood exactly what he was going through, and for him to come out and play with that type of passion, put that performance together, I thought was unbelievable." "
