Red Sox right-hander Daniel Bard — currently in Double-A Portland — was placed on the disabled list on June 9 due to a strained abdominal muscle. According to an industry source, he has experienced mild discomfort in the muscle at different times this year, but felt more significant discomfort following an otherwise promising bullpen session on May 31. The more acute discomfort, in turn, forced him to be shut down. According to the source, the injury is not considered too serious, but it does require a period of inactivity to permit him to heal. Bard will remain with the Sea Dogs while on the DL.

Bard is 0-1 with a 6.39 ERA, 17 walks and six strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings this year in Portland.
