"Middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans and tight end Owen Daniels are unhappy campers.

Ryans and Daniels were hoping to sign new contracts with the Texans, but their agents were unable to negotiate deals.

Unlike cornerback Dunta Robinson, who was designated as the franchise player, Ryans and Daniels reported to training camp. Because they are under contract, they would have been fined. Robinson can't be fined because he's not under contract.

"It's a bad message when you look at it because you have top guys on the team not getting deals," Ryans said. "If they want to reward me, they'll reward me. If not, there are other teams out there that'll like to. I can't make them give me the deal."

Positive thoughts evaporate

Daniels, who earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl last season, was a third-year restricted free agent who signed his $2.79 million tender after leaving the Texans' organized team activities in May because of his contract situation.

"I thought I was being treated unfairly," he said. "I had to do certain things. It doesn't make me feel great. Back in April, I said I'd be very disappointed if a deal wasn't done before camp. It's not done, so I'm sticking by what I said before.

"I feel great being out here with my teammates, and I love Houston, and I love playing for this team and coach (Gary) Kubiak. This is a place I want to be for the rest of my career. I always thought that was going to happen. I feel good about being here, but I don't have those positive thoughts anymore.

"I think we have a great team and can do great things. I really want to be a part of it. I guess there are a lot of signs that that might not happen."

Ryans, a Pro Bowl starter two seasons ago, and Daniels say they won't let their contract situations impact their performances on the field.

"I'm excited to be here," Ryans said. "I'm ready to go. I think we can have a top-five defense." "
