Hours before he was scheduled to play against the Calgary Flames on Thursday, Avalanche forward Kevin Porter was suspended four games for his mid-ice hit on David Booth in Tuesday's 6-0 loss to the Canucks in Vancouver.
Booth, a forward who is expected to miss four to six weeks with a leg injury, took knee-on-knee contact that Porter said was unintentional and unfortunate. Porter's kneeing major was his first penalty in 13 games this season.
"He's from Michigan. I'm from Michigan. We know each other. Not close, but friends," Porter said of Booth before the suspension was announced.
"It was just an unfortunate play. I'm trying to do my job, play the body, take the man, and he made a quick move and I kind of held my ground. Like I said, it was an unfortunate play. I hope he's OK."
