Devils rookie defenseman Damon Severson will miss four to five weeks with a hairline fracture in his left ankle, general manager Lou Lamoriello said today.

Severson was hit with a shot in the team’s Dec. 6 game against Washington and had been playing through soreness in his ankle until he was a late scratch for Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to Ottawa when his ankle swelled up.

The team sent him for X-rays, which revealed the hairline fracture. No surgery is required.

“He got hit and played. He actually practiced. You saw him,” Lamoriello said. “He went into the pregame skate and it bothered him. We X-rayed it and the hairline showed up, so we can't take any chances.”
