Receiver Rick Smith, approaching his junior season, has asked for his scholarship release and intends to transfer from Arizona State.

Smith (5-9, 165) started for most of last season, catching 32 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns. He got off to a slow start, dropping passes against Wisconsin and losing a costly fumble in ASU's loss to Notre Dame, but he improved as the season progressed. On Nov. 9, Smith caught the winning touchdown pass in a 20-19 win over Utah.

Entering spring practice, which begins Tuesday, Smith likely would've practiced with the first team, but he would've faced heavy competition to keep his job in the fall. Smith on Thursday posted on his Twitter account that he was headed to Boise State for a visit.
